Ceramic Dance

co-created artwork with Jinyan Zhao

March - May, 2025

Ceramic dance is a co-created ceramic, drawing, and performance artwork by Sandy(Hyosun) Kim and Jinyan Zhao from March to May, 2025. There were 4 sequences made in total.

The project consists of three stages: hand-building clay together, drawing from their own perspectives and sharing each other’s gestures with performance.
Throughout the process, there’s a continuous meeting and separation between the two perspectives that stand opposite to each other, meeting halfway through the medium.

co-created ceramic

Two people hand-built the clay together while sitting opposite each other.
While making, they turned the wheel around to create a shape that reacts to each other, complementing each other’s view points.

drawing

After making the ceramics, they placed the clay on the plinth in the middle to observe and draw the shape with charcoal on a large piece of paper. This observation from each other’s perspective was to process the shape they made and also the gestures they shared by touching the clay, bringing out the internal connection with the material.

performance

After drawing, they turned around to face each other and share the gestures of touching the clay. The gestures they shared are from the shape they observed and felt from their own perspective, which changes throughout the movements that reacts to each other during this encouter and separation.

writing
This image contains an experimental writing written together sentence by sentence.
They observed and wrote words about the clay they made.
After that, it was written by a method where one person writes sentences as much as they want and hands it over to the other like an endless word chain.
