In Opening Up, the artist uses repetitive gestures of cradling, rubbing, and pressing against a sculpture (the “Shell”) to bring out innate bodily experiences to the surface of the artwork. As the artist's body and the sculpture gets covered in charcoal dust, each traces of touch gradually accumulate on both surfaces.
The body is both where the memories of bodily experience accumulates and where the body's capacity to hold memory, vulnerability, and the possibility of healing becomes visible. This journey of encountering the self is processed by meeting a shell shaped sculpture, pushed away yet brought back again and again, eventually breaking it up, altering both existence of the subject (observer) and the object (observed).
